One Day in September (1999)

"A compelling and Oscar-winning documentary on the 1972 Olympics hostage crisis involving 11 members of the Israeli team. Though MacDonald's method is often traditionally expository, he selects and arranges his evidence well, and gets interviews with some remarkable people, including one of the terrorists. Some have objected to the use of 1972 pop songs (Led Zeppelin's Immigrant Song, Apollo 100's Joy, and Deep Purple's Child in Time), but for me the music, efficiently played over montages of athletics and grisly post-mortems, actually makes the film. Even if history doesn't end up canonizing this film, any film on terrorism made before 2001 (especially so shortly before 2001) is bound to have a more complex perspective than a film made after (like Spielberg's Munich). Plus, the film's critique of the media culture of terrorism and news coverage of terrorist events seems prescient for having been made a decade ago."
